… it can be dangerous. Take care when you are wireless.

wi-fi is convenient but can be dangerous

Wi-fi is a handy feature. Just find a network with your laptop or smartphone, and start browsing, messaging, using Instagram, etc.

But not all wi-fi networks should be used. It is strongly recommended to connect to a network that features WPA2 encryption. Some unencrypted wi-fi networks have been set up by fraudsters and criminals in order to steal users’ data. If you use a free, public or unencrypted wi-fi connection (e.g. in a restaurant or hotel, while traveling etc.), never allow the network to install any software on your device. It is worthwhile to choose a network that you know the operator of.

For example, if you are in a shopping mall, connect to the mall’s wi-fi and not to an unknown network. When you browse on a free wi-fi connection, prefer websites with the “https” certificate. If your computer or smartphone has antivirus or comprehensive security software installed, use it to check for secure wi-fi networks. Ideally, your subscription package should include VPN (a Virtual Private Network), which is the most secure connection method.

In summary, be careful when you use public wi-fi. They are OK for browsing and reading, but more important activities such as online purchases or bank transfers should only be performed in a secure, virtual environment. Even on your own device, it is recommended to use the private browsing mode so that the browser does not save website addresses or the data entered. Some security applications add an extra layer of protection to online banking. Also, be aware that payment information and passwords can also be found in your browsing history.

Never use a public network or anyone else’s computer (e.g. in an internet café) to log in to a page that requires identification, because your login data may be acquired and used by unauthorised persons. It’s best to be careful!

Protect yourself from online fraud. Be security-conscious.
